Public PROGRAMS
Public Engagement & Community Outreach
Before my PhD, I organized exhibitions, events, and community education programs to connect people from a variety of backgrounds with science, research, and higher education. At last count, this included over 1.5million people in 5 countries.
This gives me a unique perspective on how best to approach NSF Broader Impacts targets and other engagement-focused efforts attempting to support and engage with local communities.
Public Engagement with Research
Part of this work was specifically targeting STEM education and public engagement efforts. I have developed several programs and community outreach activities, notably expanding offerings to actively engage audiences usually not represented in these types of programs.
Most recently, I was Assistant Director in a university research center at Northwestern University, overseeing a range programs to connect scientists and researchers with the wider public, and provided training and support to build their portfolio of flexible, contextually-appropriate engagement and communication skills.
PROFESSIONAL Service
Committees & Organizations
I have served on several commities and panels, both at my home institution, and on advisory boards for international charities and government agencies.
Currently, I am the early career and student representative for the Mass Communication Division of the Interational Communication Association and freelance consult for some media agencies.
Training & Workshops
Over the years, I have organized conferences, workshops, and training programs on several topics to support the professional development of students and scholars.
Most recently, I have given workshops as part of Chicago’s ComSciCon chapter to help STEM PhDs develop their communication and public engagement practices. I have coordinated panels and talks for graduate students preparing for the job market.
